Drainage Cell
Drainage cells are lightweight, interlocking plastic modules used in landscaping to create a sub-surface void space. They allow water to flow freely beneath the surface, preventing soil waterlogging and structural damage.
They are commonly used in planter boxes, green roofs, and paved areas. They are highly valued for the following reasons:
- Prevents Waterlogging and Root Rot: By creating a dedicated gap for water to flow, excess moisture is rapidly drained away. This ensures proper soil aeration, which keeps plant roots healthy and prevents decay.
- Protects Waterproofing: When landscaping on top of concrete (like rooftop gardens or podium decks), drainage cells shield the delicate underlying waterproofing membranes from hydrostatic pressure and root damage.
- Lightweight Alternative to Gravel: They weigh significantly less than traditional aggregate (like heavy gravel), reducing the load on supporting structures while providing superior drainage.
- Prevents Soil Erosion: When combined with a Geotextile Fabric, the cells allow water to pass through while trapping fine soil particles, preventing the soil from washing away or clogging the drainage pipes.
- Improves Structural Stability: The interlocking, honeycomb-like modules are designed with high compressive strength. This creates a stable, load-bearing base beneath turf, driveways, and pedestrian paths.
